TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Tech giants Apple and Google have confirmed a strategic collaboration to support the former's generative AI (artificial intelligence) development, including the latest version of the voice assistant Siri. In this multi-year collaboration, Apple will utilize Google's Gemini models as the foundation for Apple Foundation Models. This was confirmed through a joint statement from both companies.
“Apple and Google have entered into a multi-year collaboration under which the next generation of Apple Foundation Models will be based on Google's Gemini models and cloud technology," the statement read, quoted from Engadget, on Tuesday, January 13, 2026.
They mentioned that these models will help support future Apple Intelligence features, including a more personalized Siri set to launch later this year. Apple explained that the decision was made after a thorough evaluation of various AI technologies.
In the same statement, both companies affirmed, "After careful evaluation, Apple determined that Google's Al technology provides the most capable foundation for Apple Foundation Models and is excited about the innovative new experiences it will unlock for Apple users."
While utilizing Google's technology, Apple emphasized that the operation of Apple Intelligence will still prioritize user privacy. "Apple Intelligence will continue to run on Apple devices and Private Cloud Compute, while maintaining Apple's industry-leading privacy standards," Apple affirmed.
Previously, Apple introduced the concept of AI-based Siri at the WWDC 2024 event. However, in March 2025, the company announced a delay in the major Siri update until this year, indicating that the development of the voice assistant still requires refinement before being rolled out to the public.
Before strengthening its collaboration with Google, Apple was reportedly considering partnerships with OpenAI and Anthropic. Siri is currently integrated with ChatGPT for certain queries through Apple Intelligence.
Last November, reports mentioned that Apple planned to use a customized version of Gemini running on Private Cloud Compute and was willing to pay Google approximately US$1 billion per year to support the development of the new generation of Siri.
