TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has signaled the potential rollout of paid features for Meta AI, which now serves over one billion monthly active users. This marks a significant jump from the 500 million users reported in September 2024, solidifying Meta's foothold in the competitive AI chatbot landscape.
"The focus for this year is deepening the experience and making Meta AI the leading personal AI with an emphasis on personalization, voice conversations and entertainment," said Zuckerberg, as quoted by TechCrunch on Thursday, May 29, 2025.
Zuckerberg suggested that Meta AI’s expanding functionality could lead to monetization through subscription-based services. If implemented, this move would position Meta in direct competition with other major players in the AI space, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
As the assistant continues to evolve, Zuckerberg noted that "there will be opportunities to either insert paid recommendations" or to introduce "a subscription service so that people can pay to use more compute."
The milestone of one billion users comes shortly after the launch of Meta AI as a standalone app, allowing users to access the assistant without going through Meta’s platforms like WhatsApp or Instagram. This shift aligns Meta AI more closely with independent AI tools like ChatGPT.
According to Antara, Meta’s approach differs from its competitors by leveraging years of user data collected via Facebook and Instagram. This data powers Meta AI’s ability to deliver highly personalized responses, drawing on users’ profiles, interests, and content interactions.
Currently, this personalization is only available in the U.S. and Canada. Users also have the option to provide additional information, such as routines or preferences, to enhance the assistant’s understanding.
