TEMPO.CO, Batam - United States-based energy-industry support company PT McDermott Indonesia has announced a new undertaking, the "Tennet 2GW HVDC Project," to be executed in Batam, Riau Islands Province. This project is estimated to create employment for 6,000 workers until 2029.
The launch of the "Tennet 2GW HVDC Project" was marked by the presence of Alexander Zulkarnain, Member of the Administrative and Financial Division of Batam Authority (BP Batam), at PT McDermott Indonesia's company area in Batu Ampar, Batam City, on Tuesday, June 3, 2025.
In his written statement, Alexander hailed the Tennet 2GW HVDC project as a strategic initiative and a crucial milestone for investment development in Batam. He expressed BP Batam's deep appreciation for PT McDermott Indonesia, which has maintained operations in Batam since 1973.
He highlighted PT McDermott Indonesia's consistent track record of securing major projects in Batam, demonstrating its strong performance. "We hope that the Tennet 2GW project will proceed smoothly, deliver great benefits to the people of Batam, and can be an example of successful, sustainable, and environmentally friendly investment in Indonesia," Alexander said.
He further elaborated that the Tennet 2GW project is anticipated to significantly boost regional economic growth by generating new job opportunities, facilitating technology transfer, and enhancing human resource capabilities in the Riau Islands, particularly in Batam. The project's presence will also reinforce Batam's standing as an energy and industrial hub, showcasing its capacity to attract large-scale, high-technology investments.
For these reasons, Alexander affirmed BP Batam's ongoing commitment to providing licensing convenience, legal certainty, and essential infrastructure support to investors. "We believe that the partnership forged between the public and private sectors, as exemplified by this project, is key to realizing Batam's potential as a premier investment destination," he concluded.
Meanwhile, Emha Antariksa, Fabrication Project Director of PT McDermott Indonesia, explained that the Tennet 2GW project involves the construction of electric power transmission infrastructure from an Offshore Wind Farm, designed to channel power to Germany.
"This is an HVDC type of project, and it's the first of its kind in Batam. Later, the need for workers will reach 6,000 people until 2029," Emha added.
