TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A tragic accident involving the electric car Xiaomi SU7 occurred in China on Saturday, March 29, 2025, resulting in the deaths of three people at the scene.
According to San.com and Antara, the accident occurred on the Dezhou-Shangrao Expressway, located in the eastern region of China. The Xiaomi SU7 EV, traveling at a speed of about 72 miles per hour (approximately 115 km/h), lost control and crashed heavily into a concrete pole. The impact caused the vehicle to burst into flames, ultimately claiming the lives of three individuals inside.
The incident took place at around 10:44 PM. As reported by Carnewschina on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, it was stated that the vehicle caught fire after the collision, with speculation that the doors couldn't be opened, leaving the driver and passengers unable to escape.
Xiaomi subsequently released a statement on April 1, 2025, revealing that the car involved in the accident was the standard version of SU7 equipped with the advanced Navigate on Autopilot driving assistance system. It was known that the system had issued warnings about obstacles ahead, but the driver reportedly failed to take evasive action to avoid the collision.
Impact on Xiaomi
This fatal accident immediately had a significant impact on Xiaomi, both in terms of reputation and financially. Xiaomi’s stock plunges 5.5 percent following the accident during Hong Kong trading and 6.7 percent in U.S. after-hours trading.
Ironically, this incident occurred just hours after the financial rating agency S&P Global raised Xiaomi's investment security rating from "BBB-" to "BBB", considering the bright prospects of Xiaomi in the electric vehicle industry, which is now threatened by this accident.
Xiaomi CEO, Lei Jun, issued an official statement regarding this incident, expressing deep sorrow for the lives lost. He said Xiaomi would fully cooperate with the authorities in the investigation. "No matter what happens, Xiaomi will not evade," he emphasized.
