TEMPO.CO, PadangMount Marapi in West Sumatra has experienced another eruption, discharging volcanic ash into the atmosphere on Sunday morning, April 27, 2025. The ejected volcanic material ascended to an altitude of 1,000 meters from the crater's summit, forming a dense, gray column of ash that drifted westward.

Ahmad Rifandi, an officer at the Marapi Volcano Observation Post, noted that the Sunday morning eruption occurred at 08:37 WIB (Western Indonesia Time). The event was recorded on the seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 30.4 millimeters and lasted for 1 minute and 3 seconds.

According to Rifandi's records, Mount Marapi, located in the Agam and Tanah Datar regencies, has erupted 18 times and emitted ash 194 times during April 2025. This includes two recent eruptions that occurred last Friday. Since December 2023, there have been 431 eruptions and 5,972 ash emissions recorded.

"The largest volcanic ash column in 2025 occurred on April 3, reaching a height of 1,500 meters from the crater," he stated.

He further explained that the volcano is currently under Alert status, or Level II, for volcanic activity. The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) has advised local residents and tourists to avoid all activities within a three-kilometer radius of the Verbeek Crater, the center of Mount Marapi's volcanic activity.

Residents living near rivers originating from Marapi's peak are also cautioned about the potential for lahars, particularly during the rainy season. The public is also urged to wear nose and mouth masks if ashfall occurs to prevent respiratory issues.

Mount Marapi, standing at 2,891 meters above sea level, is among Sumatra's most active volcanoes, with a history of relatively frequent eruptions.

Relocation of Mount Marapi Lahar Flood Victims

Separately, the Agam Regency Government has begun relocating 48 families affected by the cold lahar floods from Mount Marapi that occurred last May. As reported by Antara, dozens of families from the Candung and Ampek Angkek districts were transported by bus and truck on Thursday, April 24, 2025.

The relocation destination is Lubuk Basung, an area deemed to have sufficient infrastructure and is situated away from similar natural disaster risks. This area has been prepared as a new residential zone that will continue to be developed to meet the needs of the relocated residents.

In this initial phase of relocation, the Agam Regional Government has provided various essential facilities to support the collective move, including transportation, prepared housing, and other basic logistical needs.

For the second phase, the local government will implement a self-relocation scheme. Under this plan, residents will be required to provide their own land for housing, while the government will offer assistance in building the houses.
