TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A federal judge on Tuesday blocked the United States Postal Service (USPS) from implementing provisions of President Donald Trump's executive order that tighten mail-in voting rules ahead of the November midterm elections.
U.S. District Court Judge for the District of Massachusetts Indira Talwani issued a new injunction prohibiting the USPS from enforcing the provision nationwide.
According to ANTARA, the ruling came in a case brought by the League of Women Voters of Massachusetts and several other plaintiffs.
Previously, Trump signed Executive Order 14399 titled "Ensuring Citizenship Verification and Integrity in Federal Elections" on March 31.
The order, among other things, instructs the USPS to establish requirements for mail-in and absentee ballots. It also requires the USPS to reject ballots that do not meet the new requirements.
In June, Talwani had previously blocked key provisions of the order in 23 states and Washington, D.C. The latest ruling extends this block to cover the entire U.S.
The U.S. Supreme Court is currently considering the Trump administration's request to overturn Talwani's previous ruling on the executive order.
The legal dispute comes ahead of the November midterm elections, when U.S. voters will determine control of the House of Representatives and the Senate.
