TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - University of Indonesia (UI) has stated that it was not involved in inviting Ronit Ricci, an academic known to be pro-Israel. The Dean of the Faculty of Humanities (FIB) at UI, Bondan Kanumoyoso, conveyed this denial.
In his statement, Bondan stated that his faculty was not affiliated with the activities organized by the Nusantara Pernaskahan Society and the National Library. The event in question is titled "The 20th Nusantara Pernaskahan International Symposium," which will be held on October 15-17.
The event that invited Ronit Ricci as a speaker also features the UI logo. According to Bondan, FIB UI was not involved in selecting the speakers or determining the agenda.
"The FIB UI leadership has never received a request for permission to hold the event within the FIB UI," Bondan said in his official statement, quoted on Tuesday, September 16, 2025.
Bondan stated that his faculty is committed to ensuring that the activities taking place on the UI campus are in line with academic principles, ethics, and governance. He said that FIB UI stands in solidarity with all the victims in Palestine as a result of the Israeli attacks.
"FIB UI emphasizes that academic institutions have a moral responsibility to remain neutral, independent, and uphold human values in dealing with global issues," said Bondan.
Similarly, Arie Afriansyah, the Head of PR at UI, stated that the university is committed to supporting Palestinian independence unconditionally. In addition, he said UI will inaugurate the Palestine Study Center.
"The UI-Palestine Center will be a forum for all researchers and observers within UI to devote all attention to the people and state of Palestine," said Arie.
The presence of Ronit Ricci as a speaker hosted by the Nusantara Pernaskahan Society and the National Library was criticized by the Indonesian Student for Justice in Palestine (ISJP). This group of students referred to Ronit Ricci as an academic who supports Israeli policies.
Subsequently, the Nusantara Pernaskahan Society apologized for using the UI logo in "The 20th Nusantara Pernaskahan International Symposium." In their statement, the Nusantara Pernaskahan Society said the UI logo was used improperly.
The Nusantara Pernaskahan Society also stated that the event was canceled due to be held in the UI campus building. "In addition, we have also changed the event and speakers for the event," said the Nusantara Pernaskahan Society in their post on Instagram @manassa.id.
