TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United Nations said Monday that more than 40 percent of dialysis patients suffering from kidney failure in Gaza have died since October 2023. According to Anadolu, this is due to Israeli attacks on healthcare facilities and limited access caused by ongoing displacement, which has deepened the humanitarian crisis.
Quoting the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said that Gaza’s Ministry of Health reported over 40 percent of dialysis patients there have died since the escalation of Israeli attacks in October 2023.
“This is because dialysis centers in Gaza have either been attacked or are inaccessible,” he said.
Dujarric added that Israeli attacks on healthcare infrastructure are continuing, including a strike on the Noura Al Kaabi dialysis center in northern Gaza on Sunday.
He also warned of rising displacement across the enclave, saying, “On Saturday, Israeli authorities issued new evacuation orders in Khan Younis and Deir al Balah. This has affected around 100,000 people living in more than 200 displacement sites.”
“Since March 18, humanitarian partners estimate that over 640,000 people – nearly one-third of Gaza’s total population – have been displaced again across the Strip.”
He also reported that “dozens of people were killed and injured, apparently while gathering to receive supplies near military distribution centers in Rafah and Deir al Balah.”
Although more than 300 aid trucks have been collected from the Gaza side of the Kerem Shalom crossing since its reopening, access remains inconsistent.
“Today, one of our attempts to collect supplies from Kerem Shalom was denied,” Dujarric said.
Defying international calls for a ceasefire, Israel has launched a massive assault on Gaza since October 2023, killing nearly 54,500 Palestinians, most of whom are women and children.
Aid agencies have warned of the risk of famine among more than 2 million people living in the enclave.
Last November, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Israel is also facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) over its war crimes against civilians in the enclave.
