TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Coordinating Minister for Legal, Political, and Security Affairs (Menko Kumham Imipas) Yusril Ihza Mahendra mentioned that Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto is preparing a Presidential Decision (Keppres) regarding the formation of the Police Reform Commission.
He stated that the commission is established to formulate various ideas for changes that need to be made to the Police force, to be later submitted to the President.
"There is no specific target for its formation yet, but the keppres has been prepared and may soon be inaugurated, maybe within a day or two," said Yusril in Jakarta on Tuesday.
Furthermore, the Minister explained that the commission will be given several months to finalize various formulations for the police reform, which includes a reassessment of the position, scope, duties, and authority.
Once the formulations are completed, Yusril stated that the ideas related to police reform will be incorporated into the revision of Law Number 2 of 2002 concerning the Police.
He emphasized that the law, which has been in effect for more than 20 years, needs to be re-evaluated to adapt to the current situation and the demands of the people for police reform.
"So, what will it look like later, well, this is the task of the reform commission to formulate those changes and requirements, which will then be submitted to the President," he added.
Prior to this, President Prabowo Subianto was expected to establish a commission to evaluate and reform the Police, considering that police reform is one of the demands of the public, including the Gerakan Nurani Bangsa (GNB) consisting of national figures and cross-religious figures.
At the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Thursday (11/9), Gerakan Nurani Bangsa directly conveyed their aspirations and the demands of civil society to President Prabowo in a dialogue session, which was also attended by several ministers of the Red and White Cabinet. The meeting lasted for three hours.
"The need for an evaluation and police reform was conveyed by Gerakan Nurani Bangsa, which was also welcomed by Mr. President, who will soon form a team or commission for police reform. I think this is also in response to the sizable public demand," said Pastor Gomar Gultom, a member of GNB, after the meeting with President Prabowo.
In the same press conference, Indonesian Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar mentioned that the aspirations regarding Police reform conveyed by GNB have been planned and conceptualized by President Prabowo.
However, for the technical and detailed aspects, GNB leaves that to President Prabowo to explain to the public.
