TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - With a critical January 31 deadline looming, the U.S. government is suddenly edging closer to another shutdown as a bitter political clash unfolds on Capitol Hill.
Lawmakers in Washington are racing against a funding deadline amid an escalating political standoff triggered by the fatal shooting of a Minneapolis man by federal immigration agents.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and other Democrats have made clear they will not support advancing the current DHS funding bill unless changes are made, creating a legislative impasse that could leave parts of the government unfunded if no alternative agreement is reached by Friday, The Guardian reports.
If lawmakers fail to push a funding bill through Congress by Friday, wide swaths of the federal government would once again grind to a halt, according to Investopedia.
Prospects for a last-minute compromise appeared increasingly remote on Monday, compounded by the fact that the House of Representatives remains in recess and is not scheduled to return until February, leaving little room for urgent legislative maneuvering.
The Upcoming Government Shutdown Will Likely Affect CPI
The most recent government shutdown was sweeping in scope, halting all 12 appropriations areas and stretching into a record-setting 43-day stalemate.
This time, market attention is again fixed on the federal functions most sensitive to disruption, particularly the flow of economic data. With funding for the Department of Labor now at risk, a shutdown could once more derail the release of closely watched indicators, including the monthly jobs report and the Consumer Price Index, as per Yahoo!Finance.
Airports to Brace for Another Government Shutdown
Air travelers could once again find themselves caught in the fallout if a government shutdown takes hold. Funding for both the Transportation Security Administration and the Federal Aviation Administration, which oversees air traffic controllers, remains unresolved this week, even as past shutdowns showed the risks of keeping critical staff on duty without pay.
Last year, deferred wages contributed to staffing shortages and flight disruptions, a scenario airlines and passengers are now watching closely as Capitol Hill debates drag on.
What Won’t Be Impacted During the Next Government Shutdown
Unlike the shutdown in October and November, several major agencies would remain operational this time, including the Departments of Agriculture and the Interior, after their funding cleared Congress with bipartisan backing.
Crucially, food assistance programs would also be spared as SNAP benefits are funded through September under the previous deal, and the USDA’s WIC program is likewise secured for the remainder of the fiscal year.
