TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Islamic Republic of Iran has confirmed it will hold talks with the United States regarding its nuclear program, aligning with a previous announcement made by U.S. President Donald Trump.
According to Al Jazeera, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated on social media Monday night, April 7, 2025, that the “indirect” negotiations are scheduled for this coming Saturday.
Iranian state media later reported that Araghchi is expected to meet with U.S. envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, with Oman serving as the mediator in the upcoming dialogue.
Earlier, Trump had revealed plans for high-level negotiations with Iran concerning its nuclear ambitions. The announcement was made during a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
“We’re having direct talks with Iran, and they’ve started,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on Monday, April 7, 2024, as quoted by Arab News.
“Maybe a deal’s going to be made, that would be great. We are meeting very importantly on Saturday, at almost the highest level,” he added.
Trump further cautioned that Iran could face "a great danger" if diplomatic efforts to limit its nuclear ambitions fall through. He reaffirmed that Tehran "cannot have a nuclear weapon".
In other words, he hinted at potential military action in an interview with NBC News, as reported by The Guardian.
“I think if the talks aren’t successful with Iran … Iran is going to be in great danger, and I hate to say it – because they can’t have a nuclear weapon,” he said.
“It’s not a complicated formula. Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon. Right now we have countries that have nuclear power that shouldn’t have it. But I’m sure we’ll be able to negotiate out of that too as part of this later on down the line," he added.
“And if the talks aren’t successful I actually think it will be a very bad day for Iran.”
Marwan Bishara, senior political analyst at Al Jazeera, commented that Trump’s announcement of direct talks with Tehran may not align with the preferences of Netanyahu, who has long favored military action against Iran.
“Trump has wanted a deal for a long time,” Bishara said.
However, Bishara added that Netanyahu believes Iran’s defenses have already been weakened by Israeli airstrikes last year and sees this as an opportunity for a final offensive.
“In reality, Trump doesn’t want to enter a war with Iran while he is in the midst of trade wars with the rest of the world,” he added.
