TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - United States President Donald Trump officially announced new import tariffs for its trading partners. The U.S. applies varying tariffs to several trading partners. The White House referred to implementing these global tariffs as the U.S.'s method of enforcing the golden rule in the era of President Trump.
According to a White House fact sheet on global import tariffs published on April 2, 2025, the Golden Rule of the Golden Era is the U.S.'s way of asking other countries to treat them the same way the U.S. treats them.
This new tariff policy will be implemented gradually. The first phase begins with a general 10 percent tariff for all countries on Saturday, April 5, 2025. Subsequently, special tariffs for some countries, including Indonesia, will be imposed starting Wednesday, April 9, 2025.
ASEAN Countries Affected by Trump's Tariff Policy
Trump imposes different tariff rates on each ASEAN country. Indonesia is subject to a 32 percent tariff. Trump believes his country is mistreated in international trade.
For example, in the case of Indonesia, Trump pointed out the higher import tariffs for ethanol commodities compared to the U.S. He said Indonesia imposes a 30 percent tariff on ethanol, while the U.S. imposes a 2.5 percent tariff, as stated in the White House Fact Sheet published on whitehouse.gov on April 2, 2025.
In response to the new import tariffs from the U.S., President Prabowo Subianto instructed the cabinet to make improvements and remove regulations that hinder.
"President Prabowo has instructed the Red and White Cabinet to take strategic steps and structural improvements, as well as deregulation policies, namely simplification and removal of regulations that hinder, especially related to non-tariff measures (NTMs)," said Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto in a written statement on Thursday, April 3, 2025.
In addition to Indonesia, here are some other ASEAN countries affected by Trump's new policy:
- Vietnam: 46 percent
- Thailand: 36 percent
- Malaysia: 24 percent
- Cambodia: 49 percent
- Singapore: 10 percent
- Philippines: 17 percent
- Laos: 48 percent
- Myanmar: 44 percent
- Brunei Darussalam: 24 percent.
