TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - United States President Donald Trump met directly with China's President Xi Jinping in South Korea for the first time in six years. Reported by NDTV and Al Jazeera, the meeting is expected to address a variety of issues, ranging from trade tensions to critical technologies and minerals. The main focus will be on rare earth minerals.

On Thursday, October 30, 2025, Trump said that he hopes the meeting with Xi Jinping will go smoothly. Meanwhile, Xi Jinping told Donald Trump that although the two countries do not always agree, they must strive to be partners and friends.

"China and the U.S. can jointly shoulder our responsibility as major countries and work together to accomplish more great and concrete things for the good of our two countries and the whole world," said Xi Jinping.

Officials from China and the U.S. said earlier this week that they had reached a consensus to address their concerns. Negotiators confirmed that a framework agreement had been established before the meeting. Trump is optimistic that the meeting with Xi Jinping will produce remarkable results for the world.

The discussions are expected to cover a variety of issues, ranging from trade tensions to critical technologies and minerals. The main focus will be on rare earth minerals, which are essential for producing a variety of items, including smartphones, electric vehicles, fighter jets, and drones. China, which dominates the global supply, recently announced an expansion of export restrictions for these materials in response to Washington's decision to blacklist some companies.

On the other hand, for the U.S., gaining broader access to China's rare earth supplies is a top priority. Trump is also expected to push for a final deal to transfer ownership of TikTok to a U.S. entity and secure China's repurchase of American soybeans. This move aims to help American farmers, a crucial part of Trump's political base.

President Xi Jinping said that diplomatic relations with the U.S. have been ongoing for 40 years. Both countries have benefited from cooperation and experienced the impacts of confrontation. He emphasized that dialogue and collaboration are preferable to friction and conflict because China and the U.S. have closely interconnected interests and many areas in which they can cooperate. Xi Jinping stated that both countries should avoid conflict and instead strive for progress and development together.

He also emphasized that China will resolutely protect its core interests in terms of sovereignty and national dignity.

President Trump, on the other hand, said he appreciates his good relationship with President Xi Jinping. He believes it's important for both leaders to maintain close communication. Trump reaffirmed that the United States highly values its relationship with China.
