TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - U.S. President Donald Trump, arrived in South Korea on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, to conclude his Asia tour and attending the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in Gyeongju. According to a report in The Korea Herald, the presidential plane, Air Force One, landed at Gimhae Airport at 11:32 local time.
He was welcomed by South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun and South Korean Ambassador to the U.S. Kang Kyung Hwa. A 21-gun salute was also fired as the highest form of honor for Trump. This visit marks Trump's first visit to South Korea since 2019.
Trade Discussion with China
During the APEC Summit, Trump is also scheduled to meet with China's Xi Jinping, on Thursday, October 30. The meeting, according to Trump, will focus on resolving the trade war. He hopes to lower tariffs on Chinese goods in return for Beijing's commitment to crack down on fentanyl exports.
"The relationship with China is very good. So I think we’re going to have a very good outcome for our country and for the world," he told reporters on the plane to Gyeongju.
As reported by The Japan Times, U.S. and Chinese negotiators have currently outlined a framework for an agreement to suspend new tariff increases and reduce restrictions on the export of rare earths from Beijing.
Meeting with Lee Jae Myung
Meanwhile, Trump is scheduled to meet with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung on Wednesday evening in Gyeongju. The Seoul presidential office stated that the discussion will cover trade, investment, and peace on the Korean Peninsula.
In August, Washington and Seoul announced an initial agreement allowing South Korea to avoid high tariffs with a commitment of $350 billion investment in the United States. However, discussions on the investment structure have hit a deadlock.
The United States has also pressured Seoul to increase defense cost contributions. In return, South Korea has requested reform of U.S. immigration policies to facilitate the shipment of labor to new factories after a raid at Hyundai's battery facility in Georgia.
Trump has also reiterated his desire to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, although there has been no response to this request thus far.
