Trump Claims US Has Secured Buyer for TikTok

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - United States President Donald Trump stated that Washington and Beijing have reached an agreement to ensure that TikTok will continue to operate in America. According to a report by CNA on Tuesday, September 16, the deal includes the transfer of TikTok's assets in America from ByteDance, the China-based parent company, to a new American owner.

"We have a deal on TikTok ... We have a group of very big companies that want to buy it," said Trump in a press conference at the White House. The announcement came a day before the September 17th deadline for the app to be sold or shut down. However, the White House later extended the deadline to December 16, giving ByteDance an extra 90 days to finalize the transaction.

U.S.-China Negotiations

Trump stated that he will speak directly with President Xi Jinping next Friday to ensure the agreement. "I've reached a deal with China. We made a very good trade deal," he said as reported by USA Today.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent added that he expects the final deal to be announced after the meeting. Bessent stated that negotiations have been intensive and conducted with mutual respect after Trump met with the Chinese delegation in Madrid on Monday, September 15.

Public Pressure for TikTok

Trump mentioned that he has received a lot of pressure from parents to keep the app. "They don't want for themselves, they want it for their kids. They say if I don't get it done, they're in big trouble with their kids. And I think it's great," Trump said.

He also assessed that TikTok provides political benefits. His account now has 15 million followers, while the White House also launched an official account on the platform last month.

TikTok Regulation in the U.S.

TikTok, with around 170 million users in America, has long been in the spotlight of politics. The sale agreement is a breakthrough after months of negotiations between the two largest economies in the world.

The Republican-controlled Congress passed a law requiring TikTok's divestment in 2024, citing national security reasons. They were concerned that ByteDance could share American user data with Beijing. TikTok has repeatedly denied these allegations.

In January, the app was inaccessible for less than 24 hours due to federal regulations signed by President Joe Biden after ByteDance failed to meet the divestment deadline.
