TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - U.S. President Donald Trump will enforce a staggering 104 percent in levies on all Chinese goods, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said on Tuesday. The tariff is set to take effect on Wednesday, April 9, 2025.
China was already prepared to retaliate with 34 percent tariffs, but Trump tacked on another 50 percent after Beijing didn’t back off on the plan.
“Countries like China, who have chosen to retaliate and try to double down on their mistreatment of American workers, are making a mistake,” Leavitt told reporters on Tuesday, as quoted from CNN. “President Trump has a spine of steel, and he will not break.”
“The Chinese want to make a deal, they just don’t know how to do it,” she added. She declined to share what, if any, terms Trump would consider to lower tariffs on China.
Alongside the additional tariff on China, Trump also signed an executive order last night to triple tariffs on goods worth less than $800 from the country, as they are currently exempt from tariffs.
Initially, these goods were to be subject to a 30 percent tariff starting May 2, 2025. However, Trump's latest executive order raised the tariff to 90 percent. This will impact American consumers who order from sites such as Shein, Temu, and AliExpress, which is likely to lead to higher prices.
In response, China said it will take “resolute and effective measures” to counter Trump’s tariff. “I want to emphasize that there is no winner in a trade war, and China does not want a trade war, but the Chinese government will by no means sit by when the legitimate rights and interests of its people are being hurt and deprived," a Chinese Ministry of Commerce official said on Wednesday, as quoted from Xinhua.
Citing Channel News Asia, Beijing will impose 84 percent tariffs on U.S. goods from Thursday, April 10, up from the 34 percent it previously announced.
China is the second largest exporter to the U.S., with total shipments worth US$439 billion. Conversely, the U.S. exports goods worth US$144 billion to China. These joint tariffs threaten to harm the domestic industry and potentially lead to mass layoffs.
