TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Tourists continue to flock to Yogyakarta City until Tuesday, December 23, 2025, with the busiest areas being Malioboro and a few other tourist hot spots.
This surge in visits nearly caused all the streets in the city center to be heavily jammed from morning through evening.
What other tourist destinations are must-visit in Yogyakarta besides Malioboro?
Yogyakarta Mayor Hasto Wardoyo mentioned that tourist destinations in Yogyakarta are not limited to Malioboro. The four regencies surrounding Yogyakarta City also have equally appealing destinations.
"Yogyakarta has advantages compared to other regions, because it has tourism potential across the city and regency," said Hasto on Tuesday.
Thus, if tourists or locals are fatigued by the crowded Malioboro, Hasto recommends other equally exciting destinations in the region. "For example, a tea plantation in the Girimulyo area of the Kulon Progo regency, which is relatively close to Yogyakarta City," said Hasto, who is also a former Regent of Kulon Progo.
Natural Destinations in Other Regencies
Aside from Kulon Progo, Hasto said, people can also visit Bantul, Sleman, or Gunungkidul Regency, which have exciting natural destinations. Thus, visits are not concentrated in the city center with its high traffic frequency. "Other regencies such as Bantul also have great destinations," he said.
Bantul and Gunungkidul Regencies not only have a variety of southern beach tourist spots, but also popular forest attractions. Meanwhile, Sleman Regency not only has several spots on the slopes of Mount Merapi, but also tourist villages offering typical village views and traditional culinary delights.
Tourist Villages in Yogyakarta
Head of the Yogyakarta City Tourism Office, Wahyu Hendratmoko, mentioned that Yogyakarta City has a plethora of tourist villages, as alternatives to the busy streets of Malioboro. For example, the Sosromenduran Tourist Villages near the Malioboro area. This tourist destination is supported by seven tourist villages.
The seven villages are Sitisewu Village, Sosrowijayan Wetan, Sosrowijayan Kulon, Sosromenduran, Sosrodipuran, Pajeksan, and Jogonegaran.
"Each village has its own potential and uniqueness, which are the main strengths of Sosromenduran Tourist Villages," said Wahyu.
For example, Sitisewu Village offers attractions such as patchwork fabric crafts and traditional kentongan music that residents still sustain to this day.
Meanwhile, Sosrodipuran Village is known for its leather handicrafts and traditional dance arts that reflect the local cultural richness. Pajeksan Village offers lion dance performances and traditional keroncong music, which are unique attractions for tourists.
