TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - TikTok Shop is rumored to be planning layoffs for hundreds of its employees in Indonesia. While not directly denying the news, Gabriela Zikrika, Public Relations for Tokopedia and TikTok Shop, confirmed on Monday, June 2, 2025, that the company regularly evaluates business needs and organizational adjustments.
Gabriela conveyed a written statement on behalf of the company's spokesperson, affirming that the e-commerce platform, under ByteDance, will continue to invest in Tokopedia.
"We will continue to invest in Tokopedia and Indonesia as part of our strategy to drive sustainable growth and innovation," the statement read.
A Tempo source with knowledge of the matter also confirmed the planned layoffs, stating that they will commence in July and involve hundreds of employees. Subsequently, the source added, remaining Tokopedia employees will work at TikTok offices.
The impending wave of layoffs was also confirmed by two Tokopedia employees interviewed by Tempo at Ciputra 2 Tower, Setiabudi, South Jakarta, on Monday, June 2, 2025. They admitted that rumors of the planned workforce reduction have been circulating among staff for some time.
Patrick Walujo, Chief Executive Officer of GoTo, declined to comment when asked about the anticipated layoffs. Approached after the launch of an artificial intelligence model developed by GoTo and Indosat at the National Museum, Patrick dismissed all questions related to the layoffs, stating, "Just [about] Sahabat-AI."
TikTok and Tokopedia officially merged on January 31, 2024, following an agreement between ByteDance, TikTok's parent company, and PT GoTo Gojek Tokopedia Tbk. After the merger, both business entities officially operated under ByteDance, which became the majority shareholder.
The Chinese company assumed leadership after acquiring 75.01 percent of Tokopedia's shares through TikTok Nusantara (SG) Pte Ltd, with GoTo retaining the remaining 24.99 percent.
Five months after the merger, TikTok and Tokopedia faced several challenges. At that time, 450 Tokopedia employees were laid off at the request of ByteDance Inc.
