TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Thailand reached the 2026 ASEAN Championship final despite losing 2-1 to Singapore in the second leg of their semifinal at Rajamangala Stadium in Bangkok on Tuesday.
Thailand advanced 4-3 on aggregate after winning the first leg 3-1 at Jalan Besar Stadium in Singapore on Saturday, according to the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF).
Thailand took the initiative early in the match, with Sarach Yooyen threatening Singapore’s goal with a shot that went wide.
Singapore responded with a powerful effort from Jacob Mahler, but the ball was cleared by Thailand’s defense.
The Singapore side, coached by Gavin Lee, continued to put pressure on Thailand’s defense and created several chances, but struggled to convert them.
Singapore eventually broke the deadlock in the 45th minute when Haryhs Stewart found the net to put the visitors 1-0 ahead.
Thailand Equalize, Singapore Regain Lead
Singapore maintained its attacking pressure after the break and created another chance through Kyoga Nakamura, whose shot was blocked by the Thai defense.
Thailand finally found an equalizer in the 61st minute when Kakana Khamyok converted a penalty to make it 1-1.
Singapore regained the lead just five minutes later after Thailand defender Pansa Hembivoon scored an own goal, putting Singapore ahead 2-1 in the 66th minute.
Thailand Advance on Aggregate
After retaking the lead, Singapore increased the intensity of its attacks and looked for a third goal, but was unable to extend its advantage.
Thailand also responded by putting pressure on Singapore’s defense, but its efforts failed to change the score.
Both teams continued to trade attacks during the closing stages, but Singapore held on for a 2-1 victory.
Thailand nevertheless advanced to the final with a 4-3 aggregate victory, thanks to its 3-1 win in the first leg.
Thailand will face the winner of the other semifinal between Vietnam and Malaysia in the two-legged final of the 2026 ASEAN Championship on August 22 and 26.
