TEMPO.COJakarta - Public Works Minister Dody Hanggodo targets the phased completion of all infrastructure rehabilitation following the Sumatra floods by 2028. The Ministry of Public Works recorded that floods and landslides across three provinces in Sumatra have damaged 99 national roads and 33 national bridges.

"All of the infrastructure was functional again by December 30. The government is prioritizing swift recovery to ensure that logistics distribution and fuel supplies remain uninterrupted," Dody said during a working meeting with House of Representatives Commission V on Tuesday, January 27, 2026.

At the regional level, Dody mentioned that the disasters in Sumatra have damaged 2,066 provincial roads and 799 provincial bridges. The repair of regional roads has currently reached approximately 91 percent completion.

"We target all provincial road sections to be finished by August 2027," Dody stated.

Dody admitted that progress on repairing regional bridges is lagging behind. So far, the repair process has only reached 43 percent of the total number of damaged bridges. He aims for the completion of these bridges by no later than October 2028. Dody noted that the location of the bridges, many of which are in remote areas, remains the primary obstacle.

Damage also struck the irrigation sector. Records show that 31 national irrigation areas and 7 regional irrigation areas were affected. Dody stated that completed repairs have reached nearly 23 percent. The government, he said, will prioritize irrigation systems flowing into rice fields that have already entered the planting season.

Furthermore, 13 national weirs and 47 regional weirs were impacted. "Handling remains limited. The Ministry of Public Works is currently focusing on river normalization," he said.

For this reason, Dody also proposed the construction of sabo dams and check dams in several rivers across North Sumatra and Aceh. This step is intended to retain sediment overflow and reduce the risk of recurring floods.

"There is still the potential for future floods," he remarked. The government targets the completion of these sediment control structures by October 2028.
