TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - As the Eid homecoming season approaches, the Indonesian government is working to prepare the transportation facilities in disaster-affected Sumatra. Several regions in Sumatra were struck by major floods and landslides at the end of 2025.
According to Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi, the main transportation hubs in Sumatra—including ports and airports—are currently functional, as they were not significantly affected by the disasters.
"[These facilities] will be operational for this year's Eid homecoming," Dudy said in Yogyakarta on Thursday, February 19, 2026.
But for land transportation, train services and bus stations in North Sumatra still require reparation and preparation. "Some facilities, especially bus stations and train services, still need repair," he said.
Dudy revealed that there are parts of the railway tracks that are broken and submerged in water, and the underlying structure of the railway has been swept away by floods, requiring thorough technical handling.
According to him, the repair of bus stations and railway tracks will take considerable time, so full preparation is essential before the Eid homecoming period.
The land transportation sector took a serious hit during last year's disasters, making public safety the top priority before the route can be operational again.
Dudy stated that during Ramadan, the ministry will work closely with the relevant local governments to ensure the smooth operation of the Eid transportation nationwide.
He emphasized that coordination with stakeholders, both in the central and regional levels, is crucial to make this year's homecoming travel season better than the previous years.
