Strong Earthquake Strikes Bengkulu at Dawn, Measuring M6.3

TEMPO.CO, Bengkulu - An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3 shook the southwest region of Bengkulu at 02:52 AM local time on early Friday, May 23, 2025. Referring to official data from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the epicenter of this quake was located at 4.17 degrees South Latitude and 102.17 degrees East Longitude, precisely 43 kilometers southwest of Bengkulu City.

From Tempo's observations, several WhatsApp groups and social media platforms of Bengkulu residents uploaded comments about the panic and even some damage caused by the earthquake. "The plates in our house shattered and fell. Now, the power is out," said Vika, a resident of the public housing area (perumdam) in Kampung Melayu Village, Bengkulu City, to Tempo.

As of this writing, Vika admitted that she was still outside the house with her family. They are still afraid to enter the house due to concerns about potential aftershocks.

According to BMKG's records, the epicenter of this earthquake originated from the sea and is approximately 10 kilometers deep. BMKG has confirmed that there is no potential for a tsunami due to this earthquake.
