TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati met yesterday with the United States Ambassador to Indonesia, H.E. Kamala Shirin Lakhdhir, to address the U.S. trade tariffs on Indonesia.

Sri emphasized Indonesia's desire for negotiations to find a just and mutually beneficial resolution. "We openly discussed steps that can be taken together to resolve this issue while prioritizing the principles of justice for the economic interests of both countries and the world," she stated on Thursday, April 17, 2026.

The former World Bank Director explained that Indonesia is actively seeking opportunities for fair and mutually beneficial negotiations. Beyond trade, she also presented the design of the 2025 State Budget (APBN), highlighting its focus on key government initiatives such as free nutritious meals, social protection programs, and the construction of 3 million affordable homes.

The U.S. had previously announced reciprocal tariffs on imports from several nations, including a 32 percent tariff on Indonesian goods. While this tariff's implementation was postponed for 90 days following an announcement by then-President Donald Trump, Indonesia has initiated direct negotiations.

A delegation led by Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto began discussions in the U.S. on April 15, 2025, with a formal visit scheduled for April 16-23, 2025.

Airlangga indicated that Indonesia's delegation will not only seek the removal of U.S. tariffs and non-tariff trade barriers but will also propose mutually advantageous cooperation in investment and the financial sector. "So [what is offered] relates to trade, investment, and also in the financial sector," he told reporters on Monday, April 14, 2025. He elaborated that Indonesia will invite American investment while also exploring opportunities for Indonesian companies to invest in the U.S.
