Nintendo has officially announced that the successor to the next console game, Nintendo Switch 2, will be released in various countries later this year. The hybrid console will be launched on April 2, 2025. Leaks regarding the design of the portable game console have been shared through the Nintendo of America YouTube channel on Thursday, January 16, 2025.

"It can be used to play exclusive games for Switch 2, as well as physical and digital Nintendo Switch games," said Nintendo in the YouTube channel.

1. Detachable Handheld

The latest Nintendo console features a modern design and several significant improvements compared to the previous model. In the promotional video shared on YouTube, it can be observed that the Switch 2 has orange and light blue colored handgrips. From each handheld, the game console can be detached from the screen device. The right side of the Nintendo handheld console becomes the place for the keypad. Meanwhile, the left side is used as the direction buttons, complete with its analog button.

2. Reversible Joy-Con Controls

Nintendo has shown that the Joy-Con controls of Nintendo Switch 2 can be attached in reverse. The Nintendo can operate with gyro mechanics in the same way as the screen lock on mobile phones. Thus, the Switch 2 is unlike the original Nintendo Switch, which has rails for locking the Joy-Con in place. The new controller has magnets that allow it to be attached to both sides of the console.

3. New Feature for NFC

As reported by The Verge, documents registered with the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) revealed that the Nintendo Switch 2 device is equipped with NFC. The NFC feature on the Switch 2 is placed in the right Joy-Con, similar to the previous model. This indicates support for the Amiibo feature, which allows players to unlock exclusive content in games wirelessly.

4. Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) Support

The Nintendo Switch 2 comes with improved connectivity using Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) support. Wi-Fi 6 offers higher speeds compared to Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) in the previous generation. However, the FCC document does not show support for Wi-Fi 7 or Wi-Fi 6E. Network connectivity testing is only limited to the 2.4GHz and 5GHz network coverage.

5. USB-C Port

The Nintendo Switch 2 will have an additional USB-C port on the top of the device, allowing charging from both sides. However, the FCC document indicates that the Nintendo Switch 2 will still have a maximum charging limit of 15V. Nevertheless, Nintendo also includes an AC adapter of up to 20V which may support USB-C Power Delivery (PD). However, there is no further confirmation regarding the charging speed in watts.

6. BEE-001 Product Code

The Nintendo Switch 2 uses the product code BEE-001 with the code BEE-014 for the right Joy-Con and BEE-012 for the left Joy-Con. The code pattern follows the naming system Nintendo has used for previous gaming devices, such as DMG for Game Boy and HAC for the original Nintendo Switch.
