TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A Smart Air plane en route to Kaimana crashed into the waters off Nabire, Central Papua, on Tuesday, January 27, 2026. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation under the Ministry of Transportation said that based on incoming reports, the aircraft made an emergency landing at the end of runway 17 of Douw Aturure Airport at around 01:01 p.m. local time.
"The Directorate General of Civil Aviation continues to coordinate intensively with the flight operator, TNI, police, and other relevant parties through the Douw Aturure Nabire Airport Operator to ensure that the situation is handled safely and under control," said Civil Aviation DG Lukman F. Laisa in Jakarta after the incident.
According to reports received by the directorate general, the aircraft experienced engine failure. Subsequently, the Pilot in Command, Captain Tania K., decided on a Return to Base (RTB), but as the thrust power continued to decline, the pilot decided to make an emergency landing.
The Ministry of Transportation said the aircraft is currently being towed to the shore.
No casualties were reported, as all passengers and crew have been safely evacuated to the airport terminal.
There were a total of 13 people on board. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation stated that further investigations will be conducted to determine the cause of the accident.
