Qualcomm Chip Price Hike to Drive Up Android Phone Costs

5 hours ago 2

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Semiconductor manufacturer Qualcomm is set to raise prices across its Snapdragon chipset lineup beginning September 1, 2026. The move is expected to trigger price increases for a wide array of Android smartphones powered by these processors.

The semiconductor giant has already notified several business partners of the upcoming price adjustments. The higher costs stem from rising expenses in assembly and testing, alongside climbing prices for memory components and auxiliary materials essential to Snapdragon production.

"The semiconductor industry is experiencing a broad-based increase in input costs," noted a 9to5Google report cited on Thursday, July 30, 2026. "Qualcomm has exhausted its ability to absorb higher costs from suppliers."

Earlier reports revealed that the primary drivers behind the supply chain crunch and rising component costs are tightly linked to the rapid global expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure.

The massive buildup of AI data centers has created component shortages and driven up expenses for core electronic components, particularly for memory and semiconductors.

The upcoming price increase extends a trend seen in recent years. Previously, the flagship Snapdragon 8 Elite generation experienced a price surge of up to 30 percent compared to its predecessor.
