TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto has formed three task forces to expedite negotiations with the United States regarding import tariffs. Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, announced this during a press conference at the State Palace in Jakarta on Monday, April 28, 2025, following his return from a visit to the U.S.

Airlangga detailed that the three task forces are the Trade, Investment, and Economic Security Negotiation Task Force; the Job Creation and Layoff Mitigation Task Force; and the Policy Deregulation Task Force. "The President has approved the formation of these three task forces," he stated.

The former Chair of the Golkar Party explained that the Trade, Investment, and Economic Security Negotiation Task Force will focus on advancing investment negotiations with the U.S. The Job Creation and Layoff Mitigation Task Force has been proactively established by the government. The Policy Deregulation Task Force, meanwhile, aims to improve the investment climate and streamline company permit processes.

Airlangga added that these negotiations aim to achieve a mutually beneficial outcome, as directed by President Prabowo. He asserted that Indonesia maintains a neutral stance towards all countries. "Geopolitically, Indonesia is certainly considered important by the United States," he noted.

Previously, Airlangga indicated that the government would form a deregulation task force, as instructed by President Prabowo, to address potential U.S. tariff policies.

"Deregulation encompasses all areas directed by the President, including those related to exports, imports, and Domestic Component Level (TKDN) requirements for Information and Communication Technology (ICT)," Airlangga stated during a press conference at the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs in Central Jakarta on Monday, April 14, 2025.

Furthermore, the Layoff Mitigation Task Force has been active since the controversy surrounding the 6.5 percent increase in the provincial minimum wage (UMP) in December 2024. At that time, Airlangga announced that the government would establish a task force to mitigate potential mass layoffs resulting from the UMP increase.

"The government will form a task force related to layoffs," Airlangga told journalists when questioned about the potential wave of layoffs at Hotel Mulia, Jakarta, on Sunday, December 1, 2024.
