TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has invited United States educational institutions to collaborate with Indonesia, highlighting plans to expand the country’s education sector with 10 new university campuses and 500 high-quality schools nationwide.
He made the remarks during a business summit at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, February 18, 2026.
"I am establishing 10 new universities we're starting to build this year, and 500 new high-quality schools. We are inviting foreign institutions of education to come to Indonesia. We are opening up the education sector," Prabowo stated.
Prabowo also shared updates from his official visit to the United Kingdom in January 2026, where he invited several prestigious universities, including the University of Oxford, University of Cambridge, Imperial College London, and King’s College London, to collaborate in Indonesia.
“They were very interested in coming to Indonesia. And I am also inviting American institutions to work with us in Indonesia,” he added.
Beyond education, Prabowo urged American businesses to invest in Indonesia’s healthcare sector, citing a significant shortage of doctors in the country. According to the President, Indonesia still lacks approximately 140,000 doctors, while local universities produce only around 10,000 graduates per year.
“That means it would take us 14 years to fill this gap, unless new effort is made. That’s why I’m creating these 10 new universities that will focus on STEM and medicine,” Prabowo explained.
The plan for international collaboration was first announced during Prabowo’s UK visit at the UK-Indonesia Education Roundtable at Lancaster House in London on Tuesday, January 20, 2026.
During the event, he met with British government officials and representatives from leading universities, expressing his desire for British institutions to establish international-standard campuses in Indonesia with English as the medium of instruction.
