TEMPO.COJakarta - Indonesian Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo has drawn attention to the sharp surge in online gambling cases. According to him, the public's addiction to online gambling is fueled by factors such as the fear of missing out (FOMO) and unemployment.

"Several factors contributing to the proliferation of online gambling include unemployment, FOMO, welfare issues, low education, limited technological literacy, and high social disparity," Listyo stated at the Parliament building in Senayan on Monday, January 26, 2026.

Sigit noted that throughout 2025, the National Police handled 665 online gambling cases. A total of 741 suspects were arrested, with seized assets amounting to Rp1.5 trillion.

The National Police also claimed to have frozen 5,961 accounts and blocked 241,013 online gambling sites, while carrying out 1,614 preventive initiatives. Sigit emphasized that eradicating online gambling remains a primary objective for the National Police.

According to him, one of the most significant challenges in combating online gambling is the cross-border nature of the servers involved. Each country operates under different legal frameworks regarding online gambling activities.

"Furthermore, we have identified transaction layering patterns involving numerous accounts, including overseas accounts and shell company accounts both domestically and internationally," Sigit added.
