TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The northeast region of Bantul Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta, was struck by a 4.4-magnitude earthquake on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at approximately 13:15 Western Indonesian Time (WIB). The tremors were felt intensely across several areas of Yogyakarta, including Sleman and Yogyakarta City.
The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded the quake at coordinates 7.87 degrees South Latitude and 110.49 degrees East Longitude, at a depth of roughly 11 kilometers. The quake was shallow, which caused the tremors to be clearly felt by the community.
BMKG stated that the quake carried no potential to trigger a tsunami. As of midday, there have been no reports of building damage or casualties resulting from the incident.
The initial tremors sparked panic among local residents. Farida, a resident of Ngemplak, Sleman, noted that the shaking was sudden and quite powerful. "The house was shaking, and items were rattling; I immediately ran out into the street because I was afraid," Farida said.
Several neighbors also rushed outside to ensure the safety of their surroundings.
BMKG has urged the public to remain calm and avoid being swayed by unverified information. Residents were advised to monitor official channels for updates and to remain vigilant regarding the possibility of aftershocks.
