TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim condemned the assassination of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, which he said placed the Middle East on the brink of serious and ongoing instability.

"I condemn the assassination of Ali Khamenei, Iran's supreme leader. This action places the Middle East on the brink of serious and ongoing instability," Anwar said in a statement in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday (March 1).

He also expressed condolences to the Iranian government and people.

Anwar said those who welcomed Khamenei's death needed to be aware of the consequences, emphasizing that existential threats rarely produce predictable reactions.

According to Anwar, the deliberate targeting of a head of state sets a dangerous precedent and undermines the norms and principles that underpin the international order.

"At the same time, I urge the Iranian authorities to exercise restraint. Malaysia shares the statements of countries calling on all parties to refrain from further escalation," he said.

Anwar stated that Malaysia's primary concern is the safety of its citizens in Iran, the Gulf states, and the wider Middle East region.

He assured all Malaysians in the affected areas that the government continues to take the necessary steps to ensure their protection.

"Our representatives have been given the full mandate and resources to assist Malaysians," Anwar said.

The Malaysian government is also assessing the economic impact of the conflict, including the risks to regional airspace and freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, he said.

According to Anwar, Malaysia's trade and energy security are directly affected, and the government will act as necessary to protect its national interests.

Malaysia called for an immediate ceasefire, the protection of civilians, and a return to genuine dialogue.

Anwar emphasized that resolving the crisis cannot be achieved through violence, but requires diplomacy, restraint, and strong political will.
