TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The manager of a leading construction company burned cash worth nearly 1 million Ringgit Malaysia (RM) to destroy evidence of corruption case.
Quoted from the Malaysian News Agency BERNAMA as reported by Antara on Saturday, a suspect who was arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for alleged corruption involving a data center construction project tender, tried to destroy the cash because of panic and surprise during the raid.
During the raid at the suspect's residence in Petaling Jaya last Thursday, the MACC officers found a stack of RM100 banknotes, totaling nearly 1 million RM or about 3.8 billion Indonesian Rupiah, in the process of burning.
The suspect is believed to have acted recklessly by taking several bundles of cash and attempting to burn them upon seeing the arrival of the MACC team.
After the door of the house was successfully opened, the MACC team conducting the raid found thick smoke inside the house coming from the bathroom.
Upon inspection, the team found RM100 banknotes worth nearly 1 million RM in the process of burning inside the bathroom.
A thorough search of the residence also led to the discovery of approximately RM7.5 million in cash, stored in several pillow boxes, along with three luxury watches - Rolex, Omega, and Cartier - and various jewelry, including rings and gold coins.
All these items were seized by MACC for further investigation.
Deputy Commissioner of MACC, Datuk Seri Ahmad Khusairi Yahaya, stated that the suspect's attempt to destroy the evidence constitutes a serious criminal act punishable under Article 201 of the criminal law with a maximum sentence of seven years in prison and a fine if proven guilty.
However, Ahmad Khusairi added that the main focus of the investigation remains on Article 16 and Article 17A of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009, which regulates bribery and corporate responsibility for corruption.
