TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported a 6.0-magnitude earthquake striking North Central Timor Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), on Tuesday morning, April 21, 2026.
According to information posted on the BMKG's official website in Jakarta on Tuesday, the epicenter was located 67 kilometers northwest of North Central Timor at a depth of 31 kilometers.
"This earthquake poses no tsunami risk," BMKG wrote in a statement, as quoted from Antara on Tuesday.
BMKG detailed that the tremor was felt in several parts in NTT with varying intensities, with the strongest felt in Atambua, with a Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale of III-IV.
In addition to Atambua, the shakingwas also felt in Maumere, with a magnitude of III MMI. Meanwhile, Kupang City, Kupang Regency, Kefamenanu, Malaka, Soe, Lembata, Larantuka, Alor, and Ende experienced tremors with a magnitude of II-III MMI.
A scale of II on the MMI scale means the tremors were felt by several people, causing light hanging objects to sway. A scale of III on the MMI scale indicates shaking felt inside homes, akin to trucks passing by.
A scale of IV on the MMI scale means that during the day, the shaking is felt by many inside buildings, and some people outdoors, breaking pottery and causing windows and doors to creak.
No official reports of building damage or casualties due to the earthquake have been reported thus far.
Despite the absence of a tsunami alert, BMKG urges the public to remain vigilant and cautious of "possible aftershocks."
