TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Directed and written by Gerard Johnstone, M3GAN 2.0 is the highly anticipated sequel to the 2022 tech-thriller M3GAN, which captivated audiences and achieved major box office success.
Universal Pictures is set to release the sequel in U.S. theaters on June 27, 2025.
Like its predecessor, M3GAN 2.0 explores the dark side of advanced robotic technology. Only this time, the threat is broader and more complex.
The story expands the original premise, promising even higher stakes. Behind the scenes, the film remains in the trusted hands of producers Jason Blum (Blumhouse Productions) and James Wan (Atomic Monster), who bring their signature style and a sharp eye for tech-driven horror to the project.
Synopsis and List of Cast of M3GAN 2.0
According to M3gan Movie, the sequel’s storyline picks up two years after the events of the first film. Gemma, once again played by Allison Williams, has undergone a major transformation. Now recognized as both a writer and an outspoken activist, she is dedicated to advocating for stronger regulations in the development of artificial intelligence.
In an effort to make amends for her past, Gemma attempts to repair M3GAN, the highly dangerous AI robot she once created. But her efforts at redemption are short-lived.
A defense contractor manages to steal and alter the M3GAN technology, leading to the creation of a powerful new military-grade prototype known as Amelia.
This robot is not only highly advanced, but also develops self-awareness. Chaos ensues when Amelia decides to rebel against its creators and begins to take action towards seizing control by artificial intelligence.
To face the major crisis threatening the safety of the world, Cady, Gemma's foster child portrayed by Violet McGraw, convinces Gemma to revive M3gan. However, this time, M3gan must undergo a more advanced system upgrade in order to fight and stop Amelia.

Official Release Date Announced
This film was initially planned for release on January 17, 2025, then was postponed to May 16, 2025. However, Universal Pictures confirmed that M3gan 2.0 will be screened in theaters on June 27, 2025.
The idea to continue the M3gan story emerged shortly after its first film succeeded at the box office. In November 2022, a report from The New York Times mentioned that Universal Pictures was very pleased with the film's achievements and began considering a sequel project.
In January 2023, Gerard Johnstone stated that talks about the sequel had been ongoing. In addition, James Wan already had an idea for the direction of the sequel's story.
The studio confirmed that the sequel entitled M3gan 2.0 was in development. Initially, Akela Cooper was announced to write the script, but in the released trailer, Gerard Johnstone was listed as the sole writer, with James Wan and Akela Cooper credited as character creators.
The main filming process took place in Auckland, New Zealand, starting on July 15, 2024, and ending on September 21, 2024, with a total shooting duration of 52 days.
