TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A commotion erupted on Otista Raya Street in Bidara Cina, East Jakarta, as police clashed with demonstrators early Friday morning. The protest was a continuation of a demonstration at the Parliamentary Complex the day before.
After police dispersed the crowd at the Parliament, a Jakarta Metropolitan Police Mobile Brigade (Brimob) tactical vehicle hit and ran over an online motorcycle taxi driver, who tragically died. An enraged mob then chased the vehicle to the Brimob headquarters in Kwitang, and the turmoil spread to the Senen flyover.
East Jakarta Police Chief Commissioner Alfian Nurrizal stated that the unrest on Otista Street was a direct result of the events in Senen.
"The riot began around 2 a.m. or 3 a.m. Yes, [the riot in Senen expanded to Otista], but we have managed to gain control for now," Alfian said on Friday, August 29, 2025.
A local resident also noted that the crowd intended to continue their protest, demanding police accountability for the online ojek driver's death. "There was chaos at six o'clock this morning involving the police," he told Tempo.
Traffic Police Officer Held Hostage
Commissioner Alfian Nurrizal confirmed that a member of the Traffic Police Unit was briefly held hostage by the mob during the demonstration in the Otista area.
"They were burning tires; they kidnapped one traffic officer. We have managed to secure our officer, and at the moment, we are in a status quo on Otista Street," he said.
Alfian clarified that the officer was not physically assaulted but was held hostage by the demonstrators. "They were held hostage, but we managed to secure and protect them. It happened this morning, but they were immediately secured," he said.
