TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Israel has attacked the last functioning hospital in Gaza on Sunday, April 13, 2025. The attack has worsened the situation due to the lack of medical facilities in the region.
The Gaza Civil Defense rescue team stated that the attack on the Al-Ahli Arab Baptist Hospital destroyed the surgical building and the oxygen generator station for the intensive care unit.
As reported by Middle East Eye, missiles hit the hospital's main reception building, damaging or destroying vital departments such as the emergency ward, laboratory, and pharmacy, the Wafa news agency reported. Eyewitnesses said the Israeli military threatened to bomb the hospital a few minutes before the attack. Israel provided 18 minutes for the hospital's occupants to evacuate.
As a result, critically ill patients were evacuated outside in the cold without proper care. At least three patients, including a child being treated for head injuries, died as a result of the incident.
Before the attack, the hospital was filled with patients injured by Israeli attacks for more than a year in Gaza.
The Israeli army and the Shin Bet internal intelligence agency accused the hospital of being a Hamas base. There is no evidence to support their claims.
Israel has repeatedly attacked hospitals in the Gaza Strip since October 2023. The Palestinian Health Ministry warned earlier this week that hospitals and medical centers in Gaza face a dangerous shortage of essential medicines due to the Israeli blockade. As of mid-March, 33 out of 36 hospitals in Gaza had been damaged, according to the World Health Organization.
Basem Naim, a spokesperson for Hamas, said on Sunday morning that Israel had targeted the hospital's reception area and emergency room building. Two missiles dropped by Israel had destroyed the facilities.
According to Newsweek, the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry stated that the Israeli attack had rendered the hospital inoperable.
The Jerusalem Diocese, which manages the Al-Ahli Hospital, condemned the Israeli attack on the medical facility. The dual attack had destroyed a genetics laboratory, as well as damaging a pharmacy and emergency service buildings. Nearby buildings were also affected.
