TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has ordered a thorough investigation into the cause of a major explosion at the main southern port of Iran. The explosion, which killed at least 40 people and injured more than 1,000, prompted Khamenei's instruction on Sunday, April 27, 2025.

This came after President Masoud Pezeshkian visited the site at Shahid Rajaee Port near the strategic Strait of Hormuz, where the fire was still raging more than 24 hours after the explosion.

"Security and judicial officials are obliged to thoroughly investigate, uncover any negligence or intent, and follow up in accordance with regulations," Khamenei said in a message broadcast by the government television, as reported by Channel News Asia.

The explosion caused choking smoke, and air pollution spread throughout the region and affected all schools. Offices in Bandar Abbas, the capital of Hormozgan province nearby, were ordered to close to allow authorities to focus on emergency efforts, as per government television.

The health ministry urged people not to leave their homes until further notice and to wear protective masks.

Upon arriving in Bandar Abbas, President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that he came to "see firsthand" the explosion's conditions on the ground. "We will try to take care of the families who lost their loved ones, and we will definitely take care of the dear people who got injured," he said.

A photo released by Pezeshkian's office showed the president beside the bed of a man injured in the blast.

The Russian Embassy stated that Moscow sent a number of aircraft transport specialists to help extinguish the fire.

The New York Times cited an individual with ties to the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, who said that the explosion involved sodium perchlorate, the primary ingredient in solid rocket fuel.

Defense Ministry spokesperson Reza Talaei-Nik told government TV that there was no import or export cargo for military fuel or military use in the area.

The port's customs office said in a statement broadcast by state TV that the explosion may have been caused by a fire at a depot storing chemical and hazardous materials.
