TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Local sources reported on Sunday, April 27, 2025, that the death toll resulting from the powerful explosion that impacted the Shahid Rajaee Port in southern Iran on Saturday has tragically increased to 25 individuals.

According to Iranian State TV, as cited by Anadolu, at least 1,139 individuals sustained injuries in the blast.

Local media reported that a fire erupted at Shahid Rajaee Port around noon local time on Saturday, primarily affecting the container dock area.

Initial reports suggested the presence of flammable materials in the vicinity of the explosion.

Eyewitness accounts indicated that a small fire rapidly spread, triggering the explosion due to the combination of 40-degree Celsius heat and the accumulation of flammable substances.

NBC News reported that the explosion is believed to have originated from a fire involving solid missile fuel. An individual with ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) informed The New York Times that the substance that exploded was sodium perchlorate, a crucial component in solid missile fuel.

Private security firm Ambrey stated that the port received a shipment of "sodium perchlorate rocket fuel" in March.

"The fire was reportedly the result of improper handling of a shipment of solid fuel intended for use in Iranian ballistic missiles," said Ambrey.

The fuel was part of a consignment from China transported aboard two ships to Iran, a shipment first reported by the Financial Times in January.

This fuel was intended to replenish Iran's missile reserves, which had been depleted following its direct attacks on Israel during the conflict with Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

The strategically significant port, situated in the southern Hormozgan province, is approximately 15 kilometers southwest of the Bandar Abbas port on the northern coast of the Strait of Hormuz.
