Indonesian Women's Alliance Protests at DPR, Urges Govt to End Violence

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Women's Alliance is set to hold a protest in front of the House of Representatives (DPR) building on Wednesday, September 3, 2025. In their call, the alliance mentioned that the protest at the DPR will take place at 10:00 with a pink and black dress code.

Representative of the Alliance, Mutiara Ika, stated that in this protest, the alliance urges President Prabowo Subianto to halt state violence against protesters expressing their aspirations in the streets. "The President must immediately withdraw the TNI-Polri (Indonesian military and police) to stop state violence," Ika said in a statement received by Tempo on Wednesday.

According to Ika, state violence must be stopped, including by urging security forces not to intrude into residential areas and educational institutions.

Ika expressed strong condemnation for excessive actions by security forces, such as entering residential areas or campuses under the guise of maintaining security, and chasing provocateurs that led to the unrest of the protest.

Moreover, since the first protest held on August 25 until Monday, September 1, the police have repeatedly intruded into residential areas, for example, in Petamburan and Kwitang, Jakarta, or when security forces fired tear gas at Unisba and Unpas campuses.

Furthermore, Ika stated that the alliance also urges Prabowo to provide protection guarantees for the victims and protesters who have been arrested throughout the demonstration, instead of labeling this expression of opinion as treason or terrorism.

The alliance also demands that Prabowo halt various policies that are not pro-people and have the potential to burden the budget. "Prabowo must address the root cause of the people's frustration today, namely poverty and unemployment," she said.

This protest, organized by the Indonesian Women's Alliance, is part of a series of ongoing protests since August 25 in Jakarta. The protest escalated further when a motorcycle taxi driver, Affan Kurniawan, was fatally crushed by a tactical vehicle belonging to the Brimob Polri on Thursday, August 28.

Unfortunately, unknown groups took advantage of the situation to engage in vandalism, such as burning public facilities, attacking police stations, and looting. As a result of the uncontrollable situation, several groups canceled their protest plans. Yesterday, the Executive Board of the All-Indonesia Student Association (BEM SI) became the first group to cancel the protest for the week, citing the non-conducive situation.
