TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Some political parties in the Parliament, Senayan, have expressed their stance on the situation that has triggered massive demonstrations over the past week. One of the issues is the demand from the public to stop the provision of housing allowance for members of the House of Representatives (DPR).
Some political parties have stated their agreement to halt the provision of the Rp50 million housing allowance for DPR members. Some will also evaluate it.
Here is the list of political parties that agree to halt the housing allowance for the DPR:
1. Gerindra Party
The Chair of the Gerindra Party faction in the DPR, Budisatrio Djiwandono, stated his agreement to halt the provision of allowances for members of the council. He emphasized that this is especially concerning for allowances that do not meet the sense of justice for the wider community.
He mentioned that his party's faction has heard the complaints and demands from the public regarding the provision of DPR allowances. He said there will be a comprehensive evaluation.
"Therefore, we are ready to review and halt these allowances," Budisatrio said in a statement on Sunday, August 31, 2025, as quoted from Antara.
2. Prosperous Justice Party (PKS)
The Secretary General of PKS, Muhammad Kholid, stated that his party supports the discontinuation of the housing allowance for DPR members. According to him, halting the allowance is in line with the government's policy to save the budget.
He stated that the state budget could be redirected for more urgent needs, such as improving healthcare services, education, and supporting MSMEs.
"This stance is in line with the spirit of running an effective and efficient government, emphasizing the need for fiscal discipline in budget management," Kholid said on Sunday, August 31, 2025.
3. Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP)
The Chair of the PDIP Central Executive Board, Said Abdullah, requested the discontinuation of housing allowances and other facilities for legislators. He considers the housing allowance for members of the council to be beyond reasonableness.
"The PDIP DPR faction leadership has warned our members to have a sense of crisis and to be constantly self-aware," he said in a statement on Sunday, August 31, 2025.
Furthermore, he stated that politics is not only about rationality and agreement. According to him, ethics, empathy, and sympathy should also be integral to determining the housing allowance for members of the DPR.
4. Golkar Party
The Secretary General of the Golkar Party Central Executive Board, Sarmuji, stated that his party's faction in the parliament agrees to abolish the housing allowance. He mentioned that his party is also willing to return the housing allowance.
"If deemed excessive, we are ready to return the facilities," Sarmuji said when contacted on Sunday, August 31, 2025.
According to him, his party has no objections to the demands from the public's aspirations. "The Golkar faction is ready to have the housing allowance evaluated, revised, and even halted," he said.
5. Democratic Party
The Deputy Chairman of the Democratic Party, Edhie Baskoro Yudhoyono, stated that his party's faction in the Parliament will evaluate the public's demands to cancel the DPR allowances. "Of course, we agree. We are in agreement that anything related to state finances should be truly used for the people's interests," Ibas said at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta on Sunday, August 31, 2025.
Ibas could not yet provide a detailed answer regarding which legislators' allowances the Democratic Party has agreed to revoke. The Chairman of the Democratic Party's faction stated that the revocation is the DPR Secretariat's affair.
6. National Awakening Party (PKB)
The Chair of PKB, Muhaimin Iskandar, stated that his party will evaluate the provision of housing allowance for DPR members, which has been criticized by the public. According to him, the widespread protest has become an opportunity for the executive and legislative branches to evaluate on a large scale.
Cak Imin, as he is usually called, said that the issue of the budget cannot be hidden at this time. Therefore, he mentioned that budget transparency must be part of the dialogue between the government and the public.
"Yes, housing allowances, everything will be evaluated. Everything that generates social jealousy will be evaluated," said the Minister of State for Empowerment of the People at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta on Sunday, August 31, 2025.
