TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The first match of Group J in the 2026 U-23 Asian Cup Qualifiers will feature a duel between the U-23 national teams of Indonesia and Laos. The match between the two teams will take place at the Gelora Delta Stadium in Sidoarjo, East Java, on Wednesday, September 3, 2025. The game will start at 7:30 PM WIB (Indonesian Western Time) and will be broadcast live on Vidio and Indosiar.
The Indonesian U-23 national team comes with high targets, aiming to qualify for the 2026 U-23 Asian Cup, which will be held in Saudi Arabia. The pressure is higher as Gerald Vanenburg's team is the host of Group J and was a semi-finalist in the 2024 U-23 Asian Cup edition.
Victory in the match against Laos U-23 is crucial, especially since they will also face Macau on September 6, 2025, and South Korea on September 9, 2025.
The match against South Korea will likely be decisive. The Young Garuda squad has sweet memories of eliminating South Korea in the quarter-finals of the 2024 U-23 Asian Cup. However, now Robi Darwis and his friends must first focus on facing Laos.
Laos has never qualified for the final round of the U-23 Asian Cup since its inception in 2013. In terms of meeting records, the Indonesian U-23 team also has the upper hand. In the last five meetings between the two teams, the Indonesian U-23 was victorious four times and lost once.
Laos last defeated the Indonesian U-23 team at the 2009 SEA Games, which they hosted on December 7, 2009. At that time, the Indonesian U-23 lost with a score of 0-2.
