Indonesia to Observe Total Lunar Eclipse on March 3, 2026

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) announces that a total lunar eclipse will paint the skies of Indonesia on Tuesday, March 3, 2026.

The total lunar eclipse occurs when the sun, moon, and earth are all aligned, the BMKG deputy for geophysics Nelly Florida Riama explains. "This causes the moon to enter fully into the earth's core shadow (umbra)," Nelly says in a written statement on Monday, March 2, 2026.

During this phenomenon, according to Nelly, people are welcome to a beautiful sight—if the sky is clear. The moon will appear to be red, especially at the peak of the eclipse.

Overall, the eclipse, from beginning to end, will take 5 hours 41 minutes and 51 seconds. The duration of the partial eclipse will last for 3 hours 27 minutes and 47 seconds. Meanwhile, the totality phase—where the moon is completely within the earth's umbra shadow—will last for 59 minutes and 27 seconds.

"If the sky is clear, people can see the moon turn red during the peak of the eclipse, as a result of Rayleigh scattering in the earth's atmosphere. Where short blue wavelength sunlight is scattered, while long red wavelength light passes through to reach the moon's surface," Nelly adds.

The Acting Director of Technical Seismology, Potential Geophysics Engineering, and Time Signs at BMKG, Fachri Radjab, explains that based on BMKG data, the total lunar eclipse will begin at 06:03:56 p.m. Jakarta time. Then it will reach the peak of the lunar eclipse at 06:33:39 p.m local time.

Eastern Indonesia is expected to have better visibility to observe tomorrow's total lunar eclipse. While the eastern regions are able to see the early phases of the eclipse, West Indonesia will already be in motion shortly after the moon rises.

"This phenomenon will conclude at 09:24 p.m. Jakarta time when the moon exits the earth's penumbral shadow. People are advised to find observation locations that are minimally affected by light pollution and have a clear view of the sky towards the moon's rising direction," Fachri said.

According to BMKG's forecast, this year will experience four eclipses, namely two solar eclipses and two lunar eclipses. But only the total lunar eclipse on March 3, 2026 can be observed from Indonesia.

Astronomically, this eclipse is the 27th member of 71 members in the Saros 133 series. This phenomenon previously occurred on February 21, 2008 and is predicted again on March 13, 2044.
