TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin participated in the test flight of the H225M helicopter, a product of the collaboration between state-owned aircraft maker PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI) and Airbus Helicopters, on Monday, September 15, 2025. The official Instagram and X accounts of the Defense Ministry and PTDI displayed the test flight, which showed the large helicopter landing with the National Monument (Monas) in the background.
According to the PTDI X account, Sjafrie participated in the test flight and directly inspected the H225M Helicopter, accompanied by the Head of Defense Logistics, Air Marshal Yusuf Jauhari, and PTDI's President Director Gita Amperiawan. The Minister stated that the H225M helicopter plays a strategic role as a command and control tool for both military and humanitarian operations.
"The presence of the H225M helicopter is a crucial step in fleet renewal, the enhancement of the Indonesian Air Force's operational capacity, as well as strengthening the national industry's independence, in this case, PTDI," read a statement from PTDI's X account on Wednesday, September 17, 2025. PTDI permitted Tempo to quote the official statement from its social media accounts.
"On the other hand, PTDI will ensure that this helicopter is in operational condition before it is handed over to the Indonesian Ministry of Defense/Indonesian Air Force, so it can be optimally utilized in supporting the nation's strategic operations, from tactical operations to state missions," the account continued.
The video posted on PTDI's X account showed the H225M helicopter being flown from the helicopter pad at PTDI in Bandung and landing at Monas in Jakarta.
Meanwhile, the Defense Ministry's Instagram account explained that the H225M helicopter is part of the Blue Book program from 2014-2019 and is also a strategic plan of President Prabowo Subianto during his tenure as Minister of Defense.
"This step is important for the modernization of the Indonesian Air Force's fleet, ensuring operational readiness, as well as asserting the national defense industry's independence," a statement on the Defense Ministry's Instagram account said on Wednesday, September 17, 2025.
In the video on the Defense Ministry's Instagram account, Sjafrie mentioned that the helicopter requires some repairs before being operational and handed over to the Indonesian Air Force. "It's still undergoing testing for now," he said.
According to Tempo's records, the Defense Ministry first ordered the H225M helicopter from PTDI during President Joko Widodo's era. One of these helicopters was used as the presidential reserve helicopter in 2020 when a presidential Super Puma helicopter underwent maintenance at PTDI.
Citing PTDI's website, the H225M helicopter can be used for troop transport, VIP transport, casualty evacuation, and lifting capabilities using a sling. The H225M helicopter has a maximum reach of up to 909 kilometers without reserve fuel tanks.
