TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesia's Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (MMAF) has estimated that prices for cultured fish rose modestly by 0.25 to 1.39 percent between January and March 2026.
“Concerns about inflation seem unnecessary,” said Tb. Haeru Rahayu, Director General of Cultivated Fisheries at MMAF, during a virtual press conference on Thursday, February 19, 2026.
Haeru explained that the modest price increases were in line with growing fishery production. The ministry noted that there were no indications of extreme price spikes ahead of Ramadan, despite overall inflation trends.
Trends in Fish Production
MMAF data shows that most cultured fish species experienced production growth during the first quarter of 2026, with the exception of carp. Carp production declined by 4.11 percent, from an estimated 70,844 tons in January to a projected 65,130 tons in March.
Other key commodities saw notable increases. Tilapia, grouper, catfish, and shrimp recorded overall production growth of 19.09 percent between January and March 2026.
Grouper, for instance, saw an average production increase of 11.32 percent, with output estimated at 2,056 tons in March.
Tilapia remains the largest contributor in terms of volume. Production reached 142,264 tons in January, rose to 169,673 tons in February, and is projected to reach 171,748 tons in March.
With these production levels, Haeru expressed confidence that Indonesia will be able to meet domestic demand for fish products during the Ramadan fasting month and Eid al-Fitr celebrations.
“We are optimistic that the supply of fish for the community during this period can be fulfilled,” she said.
