TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia and 23 other nations issued a joint statement on June 17, 2025, condemning Israel's attacks on Iran. The statement, initiated by Egypt, was shared by Indonesia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs through an official document published on its website on Thursday morning, June 19.
The joint declaration reinforces remarks made by Foreign Minister Sugiono, who expressed regret over Israel's actions. Sugiono warned that the attacks carry significant consequences. "We are deeply concerned. We condemn this outright," he told reporters at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Pancasila Building in Jakarta on Friday, June 13. "If all parties fail to show restraint, the situation will only worsen."
Backed by countries including Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, the statement firmly rejects and condemns Israel's aggression toward Iran. "Respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of nations, adhering to principles of good neighborliness, and resolving disputes peacefully are paramount," the statement reads.
The 23 predominantly Muslim-majority nations called for preventing further escalation that could jeopardize peace and stability across the region. They urged the establishment of a Middle East Zone Free of Nuclear Weapons and Other Weapons of Mass Destruction applicable to all countries in the region, in line with relevant international resolutions.
"It is critical to refrain from targeting nuclear facilities under the protection of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), in accordance with relevant IAEA resolutions and UN Security Council decisions," the statement noted.
Indonesia and the 23 nations stressed the urgent need for negotiations as the only viable path to a sustainable agreement on Iran's nuclear program. The statement also emphasized the importance of maintaining freedom of navigation in international waters, in compliance with international law, and avoiding actions that undermine maritime security.
The joint statement reiterated that diplomacy, dialogue, and adherence to the principles of good neighborliness, consistent with international law and the UN Charter, are the only feasible means of resolving the crisis.
Over 500 People Killed
Israel launched large-scale attacks on Iran starting June 13, 2025, targeting nuclear facilities in several Iranian cities and high-level military command centers. Iranian media reported that, as of Wednesday, June 18, 2025, Israeli airstrikes in Tehran and other regions had killed 585 people, with 1,326 others injured.
In retaliation, Iran fired ballistic missiles at Tel Aviv, resulting in 24 deaths and 500 injuries.
This conflict, the worst ever between the two rival nations, has sparked fears of dragging global powers into war. The Israel-Iran conflict has also shaken regional stability, already fragile due to the spillover effects of the Gaza war.
Iran denies developing nuclear weapons, as Israel fears. Iranian officials have repeatedly stated their program is for peaceful purposes only. However, the International Atomic Energy Agency reported last week that Tehran violated its non-proliferation obligations for the first time in 20 years.
