TEMPO.COJakarta - The Indonesian National Museum in Jakarta has been temporarily closed to the public since September 1, 2025. The museum's management announced the closure as a preemptive measure to ensure the safety of its collections and premises amid widespread demonstrations.

According to M. Rosyid Ridlo, the head of the museum, the closure allows for stricter security and supervision of all collections.

"We are tightening the supervision and security procedures to ensure that all cultural heritage under our management remains protected, and at the same time, to prepare for a more optimal service when we reopen," said Ridlo on Wednesday, September 3, 2025.

The National Museum is one of the oldest and largest cultural institutions in Indonesia, housing over 140,000 historical items, including ancient manuscripts, classical sculptures, and ethnographic objects.

Security Concerns Following Museum Heist

The decision to close the museum comes shortly after reports of a looting incident at the Bagawanta Bhari Museum in Kediri, East Java.

On Saturday, August 30, 2025, several historical artifacts, including a Ganesha head, a collection of batik cloth, and ancient books, were stolen following a protest that turned chaotic. While some items were stolen, caretakers managed to save others, such as a Bodhisattva sculpture and inscribed mantra bricks.

Ticket Rescheduling and Refund

The Indonesian National Museum has not yet specified a reopening date. However, the museum has provided instructions for ticket holders who wish to reschedule or receive a refund. The process applies to all ticket types (regular, immersive, and/or Negeri Elok). Individuals can contact the museum's public relations administrator via WhatsApp at +62851-8606-1778 for assistance.

Additionally, the museum has not provided further details on the new security system but confirmed that enhanced security measures are a key focus during this closure period.
