TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Director of Science and Technology at Indonesia’s Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, Ahmad Najib Burhani, has confirmed that the four Garuda Schools currently under construction will be ready for use in June 2026.
The government has now opened the new student admissions process (PPDB) to recruit the first class of students ahead of the schools’ official operations.
According to Najib, the physical construction of the schools is expected to be completed and ready for use by the middle of the new academic year.
Each of the four schools will accommodate 160 students, bringing the total first-year intake to 640 students. All admitted students will receive full scholarships in accordance with the ministry’s regulations.
The government is also in the process of selecting educators for the schools. Najib emphasized that recruited teachers will be top professionals, prepared to support the boarding school learning system and foster a high-quality educational environment.
The Garuda schools are designed as part of an integrated superior education ecosystem, linked to Garuda scholarships for undergraduate studies. This scheme allows graduates to continue their undergraduate education at foreign universities with full financial support from the government.
Unlike the general scholarships that have been available, Garuda scholarships are structured as an advanced pathway for outstanding students, including those attending the Garuda schools.
Najib also stressed the importance of ensuring that information about the Garuda schools’ PPDB reaches students in remote areas. He expressed concern that talented students might miss opportunities due to a lack of registration information.
“We hope no one will be missing out. We don’t want any smart kids to miss this registration due to lack of information,” he said.
With the operational target set for June 2026, the student and teacher selection processes are running concurrently with the completion of the physical school construction.
