TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has urged the public to remain vigilant over the potential increase in rainfall across several regions ahead of Christmas 2025 and the New Year 2026 holidays, a period marked by heightened public mobility.
BMKG Public Meteorology Director Andri Ramdhani said the active Asian monsoon is expected to increase the supply of moist air, raising the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the coming week.
Areas that may be affected include parts of Riau, Bengkulu, West Java, Central Java, East Java, West Nusa Tenggara, West Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, Central Sulawesi, West Sulawesi, South Sulawesi, and South Papua.
“Climatologically, regions that need to be especially alert include southern Sumatra, Java, Bali, Nusa Tenggara, and South Papua,” Andri said in a statement on Wednesday, December 24, 2025. He added that rainfall intensity is expected to increase from late December through early January 2026.
Andri also addressed weather conditions in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra, provinces that experienced disasters in November.
He said these areas are expected to see relatively favorable conditions in the coming week, with most locations shown in green on BMKG’s forecast map, indicating light rainfall of less than 20 millimeters per day.
“However, several areas in Aceh remain in the yellow category, which indicates moderate rainfall. The public is therefore advised to remain cautious,” he said.
In response to the evolving weather patterns during the year-end holiday period, BMKG advised residents to stay alert to the possibility of heavy rain accompanied by strong winds, which could trigger floods and landslides, particularly in hilly and coastal areas.
Travelers are also urged to exercise caution when planning land, sea, and air travel, as well as outdoor activities during New Year’s Eve celebrations.
BMKG encouraged the public to monitor real-time weather updates through its InfoBMKG application.
Separately, National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) spokesperson Abdul Muhari emphasized that weather warnings are intended to support risk mitigation, not restrict public activities.
“This information is not meant to prevent people from celebrating the end of the year with their families,” he said.
“When engaging in outdoor activities, people should be aware of evacuation routes and meeting points, and continue to follow updates from BMKG.”
