TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - FIFA has released the latest ranking of the Indonesian national team on Thursday, April 3, 2025. The Garuda squad climbed to 123rd in the FIFA world rankings after playing two matches in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in March.
The Chairperson of the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI), Erick Thohir, stated that the ranking is the best achievement in the last 15 years. "The victory against Bahrain in the World Cup Qualifiers for the Asian zone has pushed Indonesia's position up by 4 places to 123rd. This 123rd rank is Indonesia's best position in the FIFA ranking in the last 15 years,'' he said in Jakarta on Thursday, April 3, 2025.
With this achievement in rising ranking, Erick emphasized once again that hard work will always pay off. ''We will continue to work hard and strive to bring Indonesia into the top 100 in the world,'' he said.
The FIFA ranking achievement has become a momentum for facing the upcoming matches in June. The Indonesian national team will play two final matches in the World Cup 2026 Qualifiers in group C, hosting China at the SUGBK Stadium on June 5 and playing against Japan in Osaka on June 10.
The top two teams in Group C will directly qualify for the World Cup 2026. The third and fourth positions will advance to the fourth round, where six teams will compete for two direct tickets to the World Cup 2026. The fifth and sixth positions will be eliminated.
There are two ways to qualify from Group C. Both paths are still open for the Indonesian national team. The first is to qualify directly for the final round of the World Cup 2026 by finishing in first or second place. The second is to advance to the fourth round by finishing in third or fourth place.
Indonesia currently has nine points. Australia is in second place with 13 points. Indonesia must win its remaining two matches (against China and Japan) to catch up with Australia. At the same time, Australia must continue to lose (against Japan and Saudi Arabia), and Saudi Arabia (10 points) must lose points when playing against Australia and Bahrain. Considering Australia's consistent performance, this scenario will be difficult to achieve.
