TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed the safety of 134 Indonesian citizens in Nepal during the recent demonstrations. Judha Nugraha, the Director of Indonesian Citizen Protection at the Foreign Ministry, stated that the government is currently in the process of gradually repatriating hundreds of Indonesian citizens.

Out of the 134 Indonesian citizens in Nepal, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has recorded that as many as 56 individuals have decided to permanently reside in Nepal. Judha stated that these residents will not be repatriated to Indonesia.

Meanwhile, 78 Indonesian citizens are currently on short visits, such as attending international conferences or tourism. Judha mentioned that out of the total of 78 individuals who will be repatriated, as of Saturday, September 13, 2025, 57 individuals are already flying back to Indonesia.

He stated that the process of returning Indonesian citizens from Nepal to Indonesia began as soon as the Kathmandu International Airport was reopened on September 11, 2025. A total of 18 Indonesian citizens were repatriated in the first phase.

"The repatriation of Indonesian citizens is conducted through commercial flights," Judha said, speaking at Halim Perdanakusuma International Airport in Jakarta on Saturday, September 13, 2025.

Subsequent repatriations occurred on September 12, with a total of 22 individuals flown back to Indonesia. Following this, on September 13, 17 Indonesian citizens are scheduled to return to Indonesia.

"So, there are still 21 Indonesian citizens who have not returned. The plan is to repatriate 17 individuals on September 14, 2 individuals on September 15, and 2 individuals on September 18," he added.

As for the 56 Indonesian citizens residing in Nepal, Judha stated that his ministry, together with the Indonesian Embassy in Dhaka, Nepal, will provide protection. Additionally, he ensured that all Indonesian citizens in Nepal at the time of the demonstrations did not suffer any casualties.

Meanwhile, Nepal is facing a political crisis after massive demonstrations, driven by the youths, forced Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli to resign. What initially started as peaceful protests on Monday, September 8, 2025, escalated into riots in Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Itahari.

The following day, Oli succumbed to public pressure. "I resign immediately," said Oli in a written statement on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, as reported by The Times of India. According to Al Jazeera, the main trigger for these protests is the growing perception that Nepal's ruling elite families are living lavishly in a poor country, which has created a gap between the rich and poor.

The wave of protests shifted to direct attacks on symbols of power. According to an NDTV report, the houses of several politicians were set on fire, including the residence of Nepali Congress Chair Sher Bahadur Deuba, President Ram Chandra Paudel, former Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, and Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak. A school belonging to Foreign Minister Arzu Deuba Rana was also set on fire by the mob.

Following Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli's resignation, Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak also resigned. The people of Nepal are demanding four main things: the dissolution of parliament, the mass resignation of parliament members, the immediate suspension of officials who ordered the shooting of protesters, and the holding of new elections.
